vines for an outdoor archway

by Sandy T.
(Tyler, Texas)

I want to cover an outdoor archway made from railroad ties with some type of vine. This is a fairly large archway. What would you recommend covering it with - and where would I get it?
THANKS!!!!

Great! If you are going to use the grapevine wreath idea, then simply ziptie the greenery of your choice to the curly vines. You can even just use cluster of Smilax here or there if you like.

You can probably use a staple gun on railroad ties - simply staple the grapeview directly to the ties. Remove quickly later with needlenose pliers when you're done.

Once those are attache, use the zip ties to attach the greenery here or there (even a combo of different greens if you'd like). Creates a very rustic, woodsy looking archway.

Plus - consider using smaller grapevine wreaths as "bouquet collars" to coordinate the woodsy look.

See what I mean by looking here:

Miniature grapevines wreaths can be used on chairs, etc. to tie the whole theme together.

Hi, Sandy -

Check out this website:

Smilax might be the answer for you since it is grown around a string. You can use green zip ties (like for electrical cords) and make your own garland from tree fern (very feathery) or sprengeri (long strands, good for garlands - but has tiny, cactus like thorns - be careful!)

To add to the rustic outdoor look, I once bought several very large grapevine wreaths, snipped the wires and binding twigs - and "uncurled" the wreath. (Soaking in warm water helps). You come out with long curly grapevine twiggy garlands that you can intertwine your greens around.

Many blessings on your wedding day!

Hello, Sandy!

Couple of questions first.. . .are you choosing the archway because of the location or because you like the rustic look of the railroad ties?

Is your wedding more "formal" or more outdoorsy?

Is cost a major consideration? Finally - how far ahead of time can you decorate the archway? Are you considering silk or fresh?

Just need to narrow it down a bit.
