by Sandy T.
(Tyler , Texas)

How would I arrange flowers in a Tussie Mussie?? Would I fill it with florist foam or just tie the bouquet and put it in the Tussie Mussie???

Designing a Tussie Mussie
by: Louann the Florist

A Tussie Mussie is a small dainty cluster of flowers tucked into a small, decorative cone-shaped holder.

Traditionally, the flowers are clustered in a small hand-tied bouquet, the ends wrapped in a wet cloth and inserted into the holder. A small pin attached by a chain is inserted into a hole on one side of the cone, thru the stems above the tied point and out a hole on the other side of the holder.

Personally, I prefer using OASIS foam in the holder, since my thoughts are always about keeping the flowers as fresh as possible - as long as possible.

Cut the foam into a cone shape that will fit down inside the holder. Squirt a little floral adhesive inside the cone so the foam will be secure. Leave at least 1" above the rim of the holder so the flowers can also be inserted from the sides.

Soak the foam before using in water treated with a floral preservative. If you want a variety of flowers, it is wise to choose those with slender stems, as large, heavy stemmed flowers will break up and degrade the foam quickly.

Good choices are stephanotis, spray roses, sweetheart roses, freesia, miniature Gerbera daisies, miniature carnations, delphinium and larkspur.

After you are finished with the design, squirt a little more floral adhesive such as Floralock in among the stems. Go easy, since you don't want the glue to drip down onto the holder.

I also like using the smallest size of a Belle Wedding Bouquet Holder. Cut the handle short with wire cutters, rim the inside of the Tussie Mussie holder with florist clay and press the holder down firmly into the cone. This method only works if the Tussie Mussie is a fairly good size holder that the head of the Belle holder can fit down into.

If you make of the holder before the day of the wedding, be sure that the foam is re-wetted periodically and doesn't dry out. You will be surprised how quickly those flowers will draw water up out of that foam.:)

Spray with a sealer such as Finishing Touch to seal the petals and keep them hydrated. Now your "posy" will stay beautiful all thru your wedding day!
