Making a Bridal Bouquet

Making a bridal bouquet of calla lilies is relatively easy. They are durable flowers and hold up well during ceremonies and reception halls.

You will need:

    7 Standard Calla Lilies
9 Broad Leaves (such as Ti leaves)
    Several stems #18 wire
    Dark Green Corsage Tape

You will need to cut the calla lily stems at varying lengths, so the tapered effect of the bouquet can be achieved.

Insert a #18 wire in the center of each stem, cutting off any wire which extends beyond the bottom stem. Lay another wire against the stem and wrap down about 1/2 the stem with corsage tape. Leave the natural look for below the hand hold.

Gently knead the calla stems with your finger, breaking loose the stiff fibers of the stem. Now you can GENTLY shape the calla to have the curved lines you desire for your design. Tape and wire each calla halfway down, making sure no wires show.

Start with the longer stemmed calls to form the top part of the bouquet. Carefully shape the curve with the kneading of your fingers. Tape these stems together with corsage tape. Now add two or three UNCURLED Ti leaves behind the callas, making sure the leaves are shorter than the flower head.

As you add the rest of the callas, alternate with Ti leaves that have been doubled over. If the leaf is inflexible, turn the leave over and bend gently, breaking the spine. Then strip the spine off the Ti leave. Do this gently so not to destroy the leave.

Double the leaf over and tape the two ends to the calla stems. Continue to do this, building a cluster of doubled leaves and shorter calla stems. See picture below for reference.

Mist finished bouquet with a flower sealant such as Finishing Touch. Add bows or other flowers among the design if you desire.

Here is a very similar design with white roses and lush, draping foliage. The greenery is two strands of smilax
and five stems of dracaena.
